About

Home Repair Cost Guide helps U.S. homeowners answer three questions when something goes wrong with their house: what should I do right now, what will it cost to fix, and will insurance pay for it?

Why this site exists

When water is coming through the ceiling or a crack appears in the basement wall, most people search for answers in a hurry. What they find is often a contractor’s sales page or a single price with no explanation. We publish plain-English guides that give realistic cost ranges, explain what moves the price, and point out when a problem is urgent and when it can wait.

What we cover

Who writes the guides

Guides are researched and written by Peter Miller, editor of Home Repair Cost Guide. Peter is not a contractor or an insurance agent. His job is to do the research a busy homeowner doesn’t have time for: comparing current cost data from several sources, reading official guidance from agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state insurance regulators, and turning it into clear, practical guides.

How we keep guides accurate

  • Every cost range is checked against at least two independent, recently updated sources.
  • Health and safety guidance comes from official sources wherever possible.
  • Each guide shows the date it was last updated and lists its sources at the end.
  • We review and update guides regularly, and correct mistakes as soon as we find them.

How the site is funded

Home Repair Cost Guide is free to read and is supported by advertising. Advertisers have no say in what we write, and we don’t accept payment to recommend contractors, products or insurers.
