This page explains where our numbers come from and how we decide what goes into a guide.
Where our cost data comes from
Our cost ranges combine several independent, publicly available U.S. cost guides that are based on contractor quotes and reported project prices, such as HomeGuide, Fixr, HomeAdvisor, This Old House and NerdWallet. For each guide we:
- Use sources updated within roughly the last 12 to 18 months, and say when data is older.
- Compare at least two sources for each main cost figure.
- Report ranges, not single prices, because real quotes vary with location, home size, materials and the extent of the damage.
- Leave out figures we can’t confirm, and note it when sources disagree.
Health, safety and insurance information
For health and safety topics such as mold and water damage, we rely on official guidance, for example from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). For insurance topics, we use information from insurers’ consumer guides and state insurance regulators. Insurance coverage depends on your specific policy and state, so our guides explain how coverage usually works, not what your policy says.
How we update guides
- Each guide shows a “Last updated” date.
- We review cost data at least once a year, and sooner when prices or rules change.
- Every guide lists its sources at the end so you can check them yourself.
What our numbers are not
Our ranges are estimates to help you plan and judge quotes. They are not quotes. Always get written estimates from licensed local professionals before you hire anyone.
